A cloud of uncertainty hangs over the scheduled performance of South African dancer and socialite Zodwa Wabantu in Malawi.
This follows the withholding of issuance of a permit for her performance in the country by the Censorship Board. The South African has been lined up to host a musical event on June 10 at Dominics Hotel in Blantyre.
But in a twist of events, the Censorship Board has written organisers of the event, Myuziki Pusha Entertainment, not to proceed with the show.
According to the letter, which we have seen, the board has made the decision after reviewing an application the entertainment stable made in the context of concerns regarding Zodwa’s controversial acts.
“In processing the application, the board had to review the pictures and video clips in circulation depicting Zodwa on stage.
“We have noted that Zodwa as a stage personality has built her career and fame around morally degrading stage acts which include performing in very scanty underwear and flaunting her nudity to audiences,” reads the letter in part which has been signed by chief censoring officer Anganile Nthakomwa.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Wildlife, Symon Bvundula said the decision follows numerous calls that the ministry has received since it was announced that Zodwa is set to visit Malawi.
“We have a censorship department whose objective is to protect the morals of the society. We look at elements that are not in tandem with the moral ideals of the Malawian society and we felt it is safe if we withhold this permit, “he said.
One of the people behind the show, Biggie Lu said he was surprised with the decision of the board as they were still in the process of engaging the ministry on the issue.
He said: “There are terms and conditions that guide every event that she participates in, even in South Africa. Our agreement is in line with the moral standards of our country and we made it known to her management team.
“We communicated the same to the ministry and we are surprised with this position.”
Big Lu added that they intend to appeal the decision of the board based on the ministry’s advice. He however indicated that their event will proceed with or without Zodwa.
